Chapecoense Named 2016 Copa Sudamericana Champions
Brazilian club Chapecoense have been named 2016 Copa Sudamericana champions by CONMEBOL after losing 19 of their players in a plane crash as they travelled to the tournament's final on November 28.
Atletico Nacional, who were set to play Chapecoense in the first leg of the final on November 30, asked that the Brazilian club be named honorary champions.There were 71 fatalities in the plane crash, including playing staff, club officials, journalists and flight crew.
CONMEBOL have testified that they will crown Chapecoense as champions of the Copa Sudamericana. We are receiving support from all federations. The CBF, CONMEBOL, FIFA, and especially the people of Chapeco.
